Looks like it is mainly under control now Toni. Helicopters seem to be dowsing the valley between the two mountains at lower level today. One can still see a bit of smoke between the two mountains. On Wednesday night it was horrendous and all day yesterday Planes and helicopters were trying to bring it under control
I'm happy and relieved to report that the fire has been under control for several hours. While air support continues to help put out any flames in the hard-to-reach places, the scores of volunteers and professionals on the ground (who we can't see in the webcam) are working vigilantly to keep the fire from flaring up again. They are confident that the worst is behind us. They've got this!
We do expect to see smoke rising for the next 7-10 days but this is just smouldering vegetation. The webcam will remain pointing at the fire area for as long as the fire responders need it so please bear with us... we'll bring back your views of the beach activities as soon as this united effort is complete.
Go-Thassos and its members thank from the bottom of our hearts all the local volunteers, firefighters, water plane and helicopter pilots, military personnel, and government officials who tirelessly fought the fire and continue to keep watch to protect Thassos from danger. Congratulations to all of you! We are very proud and grateful!
With the helicopter not being able to drop water on it over the night it looks to have some more outbreaks of the fires. Hopefully they can dowse it out again today. Really hard job for those guys working at it for over three days now
The terrain is very mountainous and steep so there are many areas only accessible by planes and helicopters... which can only be active when there's daylight.
Scores of firefighters, local volunteers, and military personnel are continuing to battle the fire the best they can, where they can.
The weather forecast shows light rain tomorrow so fingers crossed we actually get it... some rain would be a huge help in extinguishing this fire for good.
Update: The authorities have deemed today's fire as "manageable" and they believe it will be back under control by the end of the day. We are very fortunate not to have strong winds again today!
Hi everybody, Villa Island View (home to the Webcam) is undergoing renovation work so the camera experienced downtime over the weekend. We remade the wiring temporarily to get the webcam up and running for you. Please note there will continue to be some downtime over the coming days due to the nature of the work. When the work is complete, the camera will be as stable as it was before but until then, we ask for your patience and understanding. Thank you!
It's so good to have the camera working again so we can all enjoy our daily dose of Golden Beach - thanks to all concerned & Seasons Greetings to you all
I can't wait to see you both, Sue and Mac. With the two of you joining us, this May 1st will be a blast!
That's great news, Tone! Yes, I believe Speedy Rent a Car will be open in Skala Potamia in 2023. Want to send them an email just to be sure? (speedy21@otenet.gr)
sorted out with Speedy Cars Dimitri from Speedy is leaving the car at our studios the day we arrive and picking it up the day after we leave ( considering they are based in Limineria they couldn't be more helpful ) this is why we love Greece and particularly Thassos - nothing is too much trouble
