Wasps everywhere on Thasos

Hi everyone,
I’m currently on the island and I’ve noticed there are wasps everywhere, on every beach. It’s almost impossible to eat anything without them coming around. Even the restaurants seem to be struggling to deal with them during the day.
Is this a common problem in August?

Hi Tomazzz :slightly_smiling_face:

Yes, wasps are common here in August and September — it’s the peak of their season — but numbers do vary each year. This year they’re a bit more noticeable than last summer. They’re not dangerous, just a bit of a nuisance, especially if you’re eating meat, seafood, or fruit (their favorites!).

The good news is they’re not aggressive if you leave them alone. I find it helps to keep meals more on the veggie or dairy side when eating outside, or, if I do order meat or fish, I put a small piece away from the table to keep the wasps busy elsewhere. Restaurants are used to this and usually have ways to help, too.

I’ve lived on Thassos for years, and while wasps are simply part of summer here, a few simple tricks mean you can still enjoy your meals without worry.
