I’m planning to travel from Thessaloniki Airport (SKG) to Thassos using public transport, and I’d like to share the information I’ve found so far. I also have a couple of questions for anyone who has travelled this route recently.
Getting from Thessaloniki Airport to KTEL Macedonia Bus Station
KTEL Macedonia Bus Station is the main intercity bus station in Thessaloniki, where buses depart for destinations across northern Greece, including Kavala.
After arriving at Thessaloniki Airport (SKG), take the X1 Airport Bus (shown as 01X on some buses). During the night, the same route is operated by N1 (01N).
The bus runs approximately every 30 minutes and goes directly to KTEL Macedonia Bus Station. The journey usually takes 50–60 minutes, depending on traffic, and the ticket costs €2.
Option 1 – Bus to Keramoti and Ferry to Thassos

Take the X1 (01X) airport bus from Thessaloniki Airport (SKG) to KTEL Macedonia Bus Station, the main intercity bus station in Thessaloniki.

Take the intercity KTEL bus from KTEL Macedonia Bus Station (Thessaloniki) to Kavala Central Bus Station.

From Kavala Central Bus Station, continue to Keramoti.
I found what appears to be a direct KTEL bus from Kavala to Keramoti on the official KTEL Kavala timetable. The bus passes through Chrysoupolis.
However, I’ve also read online that there is no direct bus from Kavala to Keramoti and that passengers need to change buses in Chrysoupolis.
This confused me because the official KTEL timetable appears to show a direct Kavala–Keramoti service that passes through Chrysoupolis without requiring a change of buses.
I translated the Monday–Friday timetable from Greek into English using Google Translate because I couldn’t find an official english version. I’ll attach both the original greek timetable and my english translation below.
Official KTEL Kavala timetables:

As far as I know, tickets for the Kavala–Keramoti route cannot be purchased online and must be bought at the KTEL station in Kavala.

Take the ferry from Keramoti to Limenas (Thassos Town).
Ferry tickets are purchased at the port before departure. The crossing takes approximately 35–40 minutes, and during the summer season ferries operate frequently throughout the day. Ferry timetable: Itinenaries Limenas-Keramoti
Option 2 – Ferry from Kavala to Skala Prinos

From Kavala Central Bus Station, it’s about a 10-minute walk to Kavala Ferry Port. The bus station and the ferry port are close to each other.

Take the ferry from Kavala Port to Skala Prinos (Thassos).
Ferry tickets can be purchased only at the port before departure. The ferry crossing takes approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes. There are only a few ferry departures each day, so it’s a good idea to check the timetable in advance.

From Skala Prinos, take the local bus to Limenas or any other town on the island. The KTEL Thassos bus stop is located directly outside the ferry terminal. Make sure you board the correct bus for your destination.

This route takes longer than travelling from Keramoti because the ferry crossing is significantly longer and there are fewer departures each day.

I hope this guide will help anyone travelling from Thessaloniki Airport to Thassos without a car.
I have just a couple of questions for those who have travelled this route recently:
- Is there currently a direct KTEL bus from Kavala to Keramoti, or do passengers still need to change buses in Chrysoupolis?
- Which option would you recommend: travelling to Keramoti and taking the ferry to Limenas, or taking the ferry from Kavala to Skala Prinos?
