Beach Rehabilitation / Extension Project - Skala Potamia

There is a long, wild, rocky beach in the center of Skala Potamia where a lot of debris and sometimes garbage can be found, such as broken glass, polystyrene, fuel bottles, and plastic waste. This area stretches from Korali Restaurant to the Fish Art Restaurant / Endless Blue Bar area.

Every winter, high waves hit and damage the road because it is not fully protected by a seawall — a project that started several years ago but was never completed.

During major floods, this beach area is sometimes naturally enlarged, but it usually gets washed away and destroyed again within 1–2 years.

There also needs to be a beach expansion project using sand (approximately 25–30 meters), since the water is very shallow in that area, along with protective structures near the waterline to reduce the force of the waves and prevent the beach from being destroyed.

I am proposing a Beach Rehabilitation and Extension Project for this abandoned area in Skala Potamia. Hopefully, people from the City Hall / Town Hall and the Mayor will listen

Υπάρχει μια μεγάλη, άγρια και βραχώδης παραλία στο κέντρο της Skala Potamia, όπου υπάρχουν πολλά φερτά υλικά και μερικές φορές σκουπίδια, όπως σπασμένα γυαλιά, πολυστερίνη, μπουκάλια καυσίμων και πλαστικά απορρίμματα. Η περιοχή αυτή εκτείνεται από το Korali Restaurant μέχρι την περιοχή του Fish Art Restaurant / Endless Blue Bar.

Κάθε χειμώνα, τα μεγάλα κύματα χτυπούν και προκαλούν ζημιές στον δρόμο, επειδή δεν προστατεύεται πλήρως από θαλάσσιο τείχος προστασίας (seawall) — ένα έργο που ξεκίνησε πριν από αρκετά χρόνια αλλά δεν ολοκληρώθηκε ποτέ.

Κατά τη διάρκεια μεγάλων πλημμυρών, η παραλία αυτή μερικές φορές μεγαλώνει φυσικά, αλλά συνήθως διαβρώνεται και καταστρέφεται ξανά μέσα σε 1–2 χρόνια.

Χρειάζεται επίσης ένα έργο επέκτασης της παραλίας με άμμο (περίπου 25–30 μέτρα), καθώς τα νερά στην περιοχή είναι πολύ ρηχά, μαζί με προστατευτικές κατασκευές κοντά στη στάθμη του νερού ώστε να μειώνεται η δύναμη των κυμάτων και να αποτρέπεται η καταστροφή της παραλίας.

Προτείνω ένα Έργο Αποκατάστασης και Επέκτασης της Παραλίας για αυτή την εγκαταλελειμμένη περιοχή της Skala Potamia. Ελπίζω ότι οι άνθρωποι του Δημαρχείου και ο Δήμαρχος θα ακούσουν αυτή την πρόταση.

This post is so thoughtful and you clearly care a lot about Thassos!

You’ve raised some really good points here, and the images do a great job showing the idea you’re proposing.

Over the years, I’ve spoken with many of the locals in the area and they are just as frustrated with the situation as everyone else.

The real bottleneck here is national bureaucracy. Getting the required building permits from Athens is nearly impossible, which essentially ties the hands of both the locals and the municipality. It’s the exact same reason the road along that stretch has never been paved.

I think local residents and officials would like your proposal a lot as an idea, but implementing it under the current political conditions may be impossible right now.

Let’s wish them luck and support securing the permits and funding for the project because it would be amazing if it is implemented eventually.
