travel between Thassos and Samothraki?

We are flying to and from Kavala in the summer. I want to go to both Thassos and Samothraki. Is there a direct boat between these islands, or would I need to go Thassos to Keramoti on the mainland and then get across to Alexandroupoli to get to Samothraki?

Unfortunately there's no direct ferry. We have done it once and yes you have to drive to Alexandroupoli. If I remember rightly at the time there were only a couple of ferries a day, so timing is important.
From Kavala there's also a ferry to Lemnos now, so we're trying that island for the first time this year before heading to Thassos. I think it will be a slightly easier journey than Samothraki and we'll hire a car on Lemnos, so no need to take it on the ferries back and forth
If you do take the car on the ferry it's important to know if the car hire company allow this.
