Thassos was liberated by the Greek fleet on 18 October 1912 during the First Balkan War, ending over 350 years of Ottoman rule. This local commemoration is distinct from Greek national Independence Day (March 25, 1821). The island’s event listings confirm “Thassos Liberation Day” is held in Limenas on the 18th of October.
